Singapore: Toshiba Group Tree-Planting Day

  • On 21 April 2011, Toshiba Group of Companies in Singapore observed Toshiba Tree Planting Day. This event was co-organized with National Parks Board of Singapore, through the Garden City Fund, to plant 26 trees, sponsored by various Toshiba companies in Singapore - namely, Toshiba Asia Pacific, Toshiba Singapore, Toshiba Electronics Asia, Toshiba TEC Singapore, Toshiba Consumer Marketing Singapore, and, Toshiba Medical Systems Asia. Altogether, 61 Toshiba employees took part in the tree-planting event. These include senior management personnel - Mr. Shoji Yoshioka (TAPL), Mr. Hidemi Murata (TSP), Mr. Takeshi Hiyoshi (TSE), and Mr. Takumi Yamamoto (TCMS).

This year, the site of Punggol Riverside Walk/Promenade was selected as our planting site. Located at the north-eastern sector of Singapore, Punggol Riverside Walk abuts Lorong Halus Wetland reserve and Lorong Halus's former landfill site. A portion of the old Lorong Halus landfill along the eastern bank of Serangoon Reservoir has been transformed into an educational site and a sanctuary for plants, birds and other wildlife. Using an innovative bio-remediation system, Singapore's National Water Agency, Public Utilities Board (PUB), designed the Lorong Halus Wetland to collect and treat water passing through the former landfill, preventing it from flowing into Serangoon Reservoir. At the same time, the wetland creates a new haven for biodiversity that provides opportunities for recreation, research, and education. This project is part of the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme by PUB.

The Lorong Halus Wetland provides a new space for members of the public to enjoy not just the tranquility and greenery of the wetland, but also the new habitat that this wetland has created for birds, butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife.

The riverfront promenade on the western bank of the reservoir that Toshiba Group of Companies has planted 26 trees was recently completed by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore. This stretch of promenade is managed by the National Parks Connector Division of the National Parks Board. It is named the Riverside Walk, and it is part of the larger 4.9 km long Punggol Promenade currently being developed to create more waterfront recreational opportunities for residents living nearby. As such, it is a great opportunity for Toshiba to be involved in a local biodiversity conservation project, and to affirm its responsible, green corporate citizen role. With this in mind, we hope that the 26 emblematic trees will continue to represent Toshiba's corporate vision and commitment to plant 1.5 million trees by 2025.
